This festival originated from the workers’ strike in Chicago, the United States. On May 1, 1886, more than 200,000 workers in Chicago staged a general strike for the implementation of the eight-hour work system. After an arduous and bloody struggle, they finally won. To commemorate this labor movement, on July 14, 1889, the Socialist Congress convened by Marxists from various countries was grandly opened in Paris, France. At the conference, the participants unanimously agreed: May 1 is designated as the common holiday of the international proletariat. This resolution has received positive responses from workers from all over the world. On May 1, 1890, the working class of European and American countries took the lead to take to the streets and held grand demonstrations and rallies to fight for their legal rights. Since then, working people from all over the world will gather and march to celebrate this day.
